Turn on the television, listen to radio ads or podcasts, or read magazines and you’re bound to hear advertisements for Smile Direct. As much as we love (and utilize) clear aligners, we cannot recommend any system that does not require a single visit to the dentist. Clear aligners such as Invisalign are fantastic options for many orthodontic imperfections. Still, there are some cases that respond better to the use of traditional braces. What are they and why should you emBRACE them?
A Case for Aligners
One of the reasons that patients love the idea of clear aligners is that they allow greater freedom than traditional braces. Simply pop the aligner trays out when you eat and clean your teeth, no restrictions whatsoever. Clear aligners can fix many of the most common orthodontic imperfections, but there are cases that respond better to traditional braces.
When you think of braces, you likely visualize giant brackets, headgear, and a mouth full of metal. While metal is still used in many types of braces, traditional orthodontics have come a long way in the past couple of decades. The brackets are smaller and flatter than before, minimizing the protruding lips associated with braces. Additionally, the bands we use to attach the archwires are available in an array of colors, making braces an opportunity to make a fashion statement (Atlanta Falcons colors, anyone?). Best of all, they are permanent, which means that no matter how lazy or forgetful a patient is, the braces aren’t going anywhere until I remove them.
If you’ve been considering orthodontic treatment but are skeptical about using clear aligners, then let’s talk about how traditional braces could work for you. Whatever your lifestyle or concerns, together we can find a solution that works.
