Braces have come a long way in the past decade. While traditional metal braces are still used in younger patients to achieve straight, beautiful smiles, they are much smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than ever before. Our doctors routinely use this type of braces and even encourage patients to be creative with which band colors are used at each appointment.
Get the smile you deserve with traditional braces.
How Braces Are Constructed
Metal braces are made of high-quality stainless steel or titanium and consist of three main parts:
- Brackets, which are bonded to the teeth using a special glue that holds them in place.
- Archwire, the thin metal wire that connects each bracket and gently moves your teeth into place.
- Ligature elastics, or rubber bands, which are the colored ties (available in a rainbow of colors) that hold the archwires to the brackets.
How Braces Work
Once placed, braces place constant pressure on your teeth, guiding them into proper position. At each appointment, your orthodontist may tighten the archwires and will change the ligature elastics. In addition to braces, some patients may need to wear rubber bands to change the bite.
